Google highlighting web's need for speed

Return to internet news headlinesArticle date: Wed, 24 Jun 2009 09:58 GMT

Google is looking to get website programmers and builders hooked on speed with a new website.

Speed has long been a primary goal of Google's search engine. The company often boasts that its goal is to get you onto and off of its domain as fast as possible. Google has already started to help Web publishers test their sites with a Firefox plug-in called PageSpeed - much like Yahoo's YSlow.

Google is launching the site to emphasise the importance of speed on the web and it will provide a wealth of tips to speed up page loading times. Plus Google executives will be talking about speed all week at the Velocity conference in San Jose.

Google has for the last year been highlighting technologies such as HTML 5 and JavaScript, pointing toward those improvements as a way of making the web faster and more enjoyable.
