The first large scale internet hub and hosting facility is being built in Manchester following an agreement signed by City Council, Ask Developments and web host UKFast.

The purpose-built facility, which will be housed at Central Park in New ton Heath, will contain a bank of "eco-servers" and low-power computers. It will be operational in late 2008.

A recent report estimated that the electricity used by internet hosting facilities and data servers is responsible for 0.8 per cent of the planet's total power consumption.
