From snowy 'tomb' to place in the sun - March 06CHEATING death in an Alpine avalanche changed Lawrence Jones's whole outlook on life.
Five years later the Manchester businessman is riding high at the top of his award-winning company, UKFast.Net. While he was buried alive, unable to breathe, under the snow, he mentally said goodbye to his nearest and dearest. After eight minutes, his heart stopped, but incredibly one of his snowboarding companions - a heart surgeon - tunnelled deep into the snow to revive him and he was airlifted to safety. The extent of his good fortune came home to him while he was lying in hospital at Grenoble, France. "Every single person - porters, kitchen staff, doctors - kept touching me. I was told they wanted my luck to rub off on them," he said. He accepts luck may have played a part in his current success, but believes this is really down to the determined attitude that was born the day he almost died. Provider "Every moment I have is a bonus and a chance to create the most fulfilling life possible," said Lawrence, who is celebrating the latest in a string of awards won by the company. It has just been crowned as the internet's best hosting provider for the second year in a row at the ISPA awards. Judges were impressed with its personal and friendly customer support, with a technical person promising to pick up the phone within three rings - a policy they tested out. "With this commitment to customer service and support, UKFast.Net wins hands down", said an ISPA spokesman. Lawrence is full of praise for the 24-strong staff, whom he sees as a "fantastic extended family" at the business which he and wife Gail built from nothing. Since its start in 1999, UKFast.Net has lived up to its name, with swift expansion which doubled its turnover to £1.7m last year. This year it is aiming to break through the £4m barrier. "Every time UKFast.Net wins an award, I pinch myself and wonder if it's just a dream and I really did die that day," said Lawrence. |
