Business complex goes clean and green2 August 2007
Eco-friendly energy will be top priority when a clean and green Internet centre is built at the Central Park business complex. Regeneration firm Ask:Goodman has joined forces with Internet hosting specialists UKFast.Net and Manchester City council in a bid to build the world's first environmentally friendly Internet hosting centre. In the past, experts have worried about the huge amount of energy Internet hosting centres use, much of which cannot be renewed. The idea of the environmentally-friendly centre is to re-use the large amount of heat energy generated by computers in a bid to cut down on carbon dioxide levels. Councillor Neil Swannick, executive councillor said: "This is exactly the sort of development we want to encourage, building on Manchester's enviable track record in developing digital industries, while leading the way in building greener sustainable cities." Dave Carter, head of Manchester Digital Development Agency said: "This facility will help satisfy the massive demand for computer capacity in the city, as well as being the first significant step to a greener internet." It is hoped the facility will be available by 2008. The new projects offer of high quality housing and ultra high speed internet access is expected to attract large industrial firms to central Park, creating a wide range of jobs to the regeneration area in the process.
